Garnet Marie (Laughy) Smith, 74

The third daughter of John and Rhoda Laughy died Monday, March 17, 2014, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.
Born Feb. 28, 1940, on the family farm in Baudette, Minn., she graduated from Baudette High School in 1958. Garnet continued her education at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., and attended and worked at the University of Idaho.

Garnet was active in the St. James Catholic Community; Stewart Runyon Post No. 27 American Legion Auxiliary; and sponsored a child through the Christian Foundation for Children since 1995.
After moving to Lewiston, she worked for 20 years at the Northwest Children’s Home as a child care counselor.
Garnet was preceded in death by her infant son, David; sister Kathryn (Laughy) Pranke; and father John Laughy.
Survivors include her children, Howard III, Scott (Flossie), Jonathan and Gwen Smith. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Samuel, Graham (Bethany) and Kassandra Smith; mother Rhoda Laughy; sisters Joan (Norman) Undahl, Maureen Laughy and Carol (Ken) Mattison; brother-in-law Gary Pranke; ex-husband Howard U. Smith Jr.; and numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life with rosary and visitation will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church, 1519 Ripon Ave., in Lewiston. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James, with a reception following.

Our Garnet was a gem. We will all miss her and were blessed to have had her in our family circle.
