Albert “Dave” David Brecke Sr., 75 of Lake of the Woods, MN, died Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
He was born on July 28, 1938, in Aurora, Illinois, the son of Albert and Ruby (Johnson) Brecke. He was baptized on September 18, 1938 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Aurora. He was raised and educated in Aurora until the age of 10, when his family moved to Vergas, MN and bought the Sunset Bay Resort. He was confirmed on June 3, 1954, at the St. John’s Church in Vergas, MN. He graduated from Frazee High School in 1956. He served in the US Army, Company B, 409 Infantry in Detroit Lakes in 1957. He met Sharon Otto at his parents resort, and they were married on June 28, 1963. They moved to Minneapolis that year, and together they had three children. The family moved back to Vergas in 1973, and Albert and Sharon were divorced in 1975. He lived in Fargo briefly before moving back to Vergas. In 1993 he took a fishing trip to Lake of the Woods, and stayed, moving there after loving the area. He helped the area resorts with maintenance and dock work. He helped his son build a house from the ground up. He has been battling chronic illness since 2011; back pain, heart disease, and asbestosis. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, and loved his dogs.
He is survived by his children; Albert D. Brecke Jr. of Bemidji, Jonathan W. Brecke of Kansas City, MO, Melissa A Brecke Bekemeyer of Sarasota, Florida, Grandson, Griffin T. Brecke of Sarasota, Florida.
The Memorial Service will be Sunday April 13th 2:30 pm at Bemidji First Lurtheran Church. The address for the chruch is 900 Bemidji Ave N, Bemidji, MN 56601.
