Edel Kadry, 89
Edel was born December 17, 1924 in Roosevelt, Minnesota to Alfred and Julia Norquist. She grew up on the family farm in a largely Scandinavian community. She was very proud of her Scandinavian heritage.
During World War II, she worked in the shipyards in Portland, Oregon. She was a welder and carried her welder’s card with her throughout her life.
After the war, she returned to Roosevelt and married Jim Kadry who lived in the neighboring town. They settled in Warroad, Minnesota and had 4 daughters. In 1952, they decided to make they move from Minnesota to warmer California. They settled in Modesto.
Edel was a volunteer at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Sunday school for many years. Throughout her life, she volunteered for many organizations including the American Cancer Society. She was an avid bowler and bowled in many leagues until the age of 86.
Edel worked at Tri-Valley Growers, starting at Plant 1 and retiring from Plant 7. She also worked for many years as a gift-wrapper during the holiday season at Village Drug Store in McHenry Village.
She loved to travel near and far. Edel and Jim took many cruises and traveled to countries in Europe. Her favorite trip was a Scandinavian cruise. They also enjoyed driving around California.
Edel was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, by her brothers Jimmie Norquist, Ray Norquist and Jeff Norquist and her sisters Millie Hart and Hazel Grill.
She is survived by her daughters Denise Abbey (Bob), Dallas Marsh (Garrad), Jennifer Kadry and Alida Pohl (Pat). She is survived by her sisters Harriet Anderson and Joyce Riddick and her brothers Johnny Norquist (Carol) and Gale Norquist (Carol). Also, surviving Edel are many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. She had many nieces and nephews and their families who will miss her. She also leaves behind her dear friends Isabelle Williams and Mary Arroyo.
A Celebration of Life was held at Emanuel Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall on Sunday, April 13, 2014.
