Merlin Albin Slaathaug, 80

Merlin Albin Slaathaug, the son of the late Merlin O. and Albina (Pulkrabek) Slaathaug, was born January 15, 1934, in New Englund, ND.  He attended a country school near his home close to Amidon, ND.  The family moved to Glendive, MT where Merlin went to work in the oil fields moving around quite often.  On September 9, 1957, he was united in marriage to Wionia Schmidt of Medicine Lake, MT by Pastor Raynard Huglen performing his first wedding ceremony.  Merlin continued working in the oil fields and went on to farming in Slope Co., ND and in 1973, they came to a farm near Karlstad.  In 1996, they moved into Karlstad where they have since resided.  Merlin passed away Monday morning, September 22, 2014, at the Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN at the age of 80 years,  8 months and 7 days.   
   He is survived by his wife, Wionia;  three daughters: Audrey (Mac) Bailey, of Marshfield, WI,  Janet (Richard) Wood, of Karlstad and Kim (Todd) Sheehan, of Chetek, Wi;  one son: Todd (Shaun), of Swansboro, NC;  7 grandchildren;  9 great-grandchildren;  one sister: Darlene Verry, of Belle Fourche, SD, in addition to nieces, nephews and other relatives.
   Merlin was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Angela Currier; and brothers: Lloyd, Clarence and Glenn.
