Sophie Johnson, the daughter of the late George and Agnes (Grembowski) Woinarowicz, was born May 5, 1923, in Eagle Point Twp. of Marshall Co., near Stephen, MN. She attended the former Eagle Point School near her home and was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. On June 14, 1949, Sophie was united in marriage to Norman E. Johnson at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red River Twp. of rural Stephen. Sophie and Norman made their home in Deerwood Twp., Kittson Co., near Karlstad, where they farmed during the early years of their marriage. She was a long-time member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church of Karlstad. In 1969, she became employed at the former Arctic Cat Plant in Karlstad and later in food services at the Karlstad Memorial Nursing Center. Sophie enjoyed gardening and homemaking. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Norman passed away April 15, 2006. In January of 2013, she became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Care Center at Erskine, MN, and passed away peacefully in the loving care of the staff there on Friday morning, September 19, 2014, at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 14 days.
She is survived by four sons: Wyman (Linda), of Hastings, MN., and Myron, Gary (Paula) and Brad (Sherry), all of Karlstad; two daughters: Geraldine (Bruce) Benitt, of Holt, MN and Judy (Denny) Mager, of Grand Rapids, MN; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Gertrude Kuznia, of Warren, MN and Katherine Widstrand, of Blaine, MN; six sisters-in-law: Dorothy Woinarowicz, Delores DeSautel, Joyce Woinarowicz, Lorraine Hamberg, Harriet Lindstrom and Bernice Johnson; one brother-in-law: Harold Hanevold; in addition to many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one great-grandson: Grady Jon Benitt, four brothers: Casmer, Roman, Joseph and Carl; and three sisters: Annie, Martha and Florence.
