Irene Evelyn Johannsen Thompson, 96, of Baudette, MN and formerly Laporte, MN died Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Lakewood Care Center, Baudette.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Pastor William Moeller, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be for one hour before the service on Monday at the funeral home.   Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
Irene  was born on July 18, 1918 to John & Laura (Schmidt) Johannsen on their family farm where she grew and attended school through the 8th grade in Drammen Township, Lincoln County, MN.  In 1940 she married Lawrence Thompson in Lake Benton, MN.  They lived at Bagley, Walker & in Lake Itasca lumber camps where Lawrence owned a sawmill.  In 1943 they moved to Laporte where they farmed and Lawrence did carpenter work.  Irene worked for two years at a local boy’s camp.  After Lawrence died in 1976, she moved in with her parents in Laporte.  Her father passed away in 1978.  In 1990 she and her mother moved to Evergreen Acres in Bemidji.  Her mother died in 1992.  In 1997 she moved to Baudette to live near her son and family.  In September 2011 Irene entered Parker’s Assisted Residential Care in Baudette.  In December 2011she moved to Lakewood Health Care in Baudette where she remained until her death.
She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran in Lake Benton, Immanuel Lutheran in Walker, St. Paul’s Lutheran in Guthrie, Trinity Lutheran in Bemidji and later joined Bethlehem Lutheran in Baudette.  She taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school for several years.  She was a member of Guthrie Homemakers and a volunteer for Project Head Start and Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Irene enjoyed traveling, visiting friends, sewing, cooking, baking and making homemade jelly for her family and friends, as well as doing crafts, gardening, volunteer work, writing letters and helping others.  She will always be remembered as a devout Christian, a very caring person, a hard worker, a wonderful cook, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.
She is survived by her son Glen (Gloria) Thompson, Baudette; daughter Karen (Greg) Hommerding, Laporte, 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
