Virgil Aldon Hams

Virgil Aldon Hams, the son of the late Orville and Thilda (Anderson) Hams, was born on February 4, 1929, at Karlstad, MN.  He attended school and grew to manhood at Karlstad, graduating from Karlstad High School in 1949.  He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Karlstad and was a life-long member there, serving as past President of his church and was a lay minister for several years.  On November 4, 1949, he was united in marriage to Gerda Pederson in St. Paul, MN.  Virgil served with the U.S. Army from September, 1952, until discharge in 1954, and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict.  He was employed at the former Froberg’s Dept. Store and at Henry Peterson’s Auto Salvage Yard in Karlstad.  Virgil was a charter member and past President of the  Karlstad Eagles Club.  He enjoyed golfing, wood working, fishing, gardening and dancing.  Virgil has resided at the Karlstad Healthcare Center since September, 2013, and passed away there on Saturday afternoon, November 15, 2014, at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 11 days.
 
   He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gerda;  two daughters: Valerie (Richard) Duellman, of Chanhassen, MN and Vicki (Richard) Larson, of Lakeville, MN;  nine grandchildren: Jadi, Joor, Christine, Chandler, Brooklyn, Cooper, Lance, Eli and Amy;  five great-grandchildren: Bauer, Jacob, Tucker, Arin and Rachel;  two sisters: Ardell Phelan, of Chicago, IL and Carrol Carlson, of St. Paul;  one brother: Dean (Gloria) Hams, of Thief River Falls; brother-in-law: Norman Klegstad, Karlstad; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
 
   Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Lester and Mike and three sisters: June, Sharon and Francis.
