A Memorial Gathering will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service Chapel in Chisholm.  Military rights will be accorded by the Mid-Range Honor Guard at 5:00 PM at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service.

Daniel Smith, age 71, of Chisholm, died unexpectedly Friday, December 5, 2014, at his residence.  He was born July 18, 1943, in Littlefork, Minnesota to James A. and Aagot Smith.

He enlisted into the U.S. Army at age 16 and was stationed in Munich, Germany.  Daniel married Doris Nelson on March 30, 1968 in Baudette, Minnesota.

Danny was a conscientious, hardworking, honest and good man.  He was quiet, humble and private, preferring fishing or tinkering in his shop to crowds.  Anyone who knew him also knows he was a bit of a worrier, but an all-around good guy.  He had a wry sense of humor and was sure of his facts before speaking.  He was a member of IUOE Local 49 having joined in October of 1967 and retired in 2005.  He operated the paver for various construction companies including E.W. Coons, Mesabi Bituminous, retiring from heavy equipment and paver operation after many years for Ulland Brothers.
Daniel is survived and will be sorely missed by his wife, Doris; children, Lisa Smith (Brett Kishel), Joseph (Sara) Smith; grandchildren, Miranda, Korissa, Alexa, Bennett, and Aidan; sisters, Lorraine (Dale) Fanning, and Mary Smith; brother, Joseph A. Smith; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jim and Al.
