Francis A. Flaa, 89

Francis A. Flaa, 89, of East Grand Forks, MN passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Francis A. “Frank” Flaa was born on November 21, 1925 in Gary, MN, the son of the late Paul and Pauline (Lystne) Flaa.  He graduated from Gary High School in 1943, Concordia College in 1950, and the University of North Dakota with a Master’s Degree in Accounting and Guidance and Counseling.  He served in the United States Army as a Corporal during WWII.

Frank married Jeannine Anderson on December 31, 1950 at Gary Lutheran Church in Gary, MN.  The couple eventually settled in East Grand Forks, MN where they raised their 5 sons.  Frank worked as a guidance counselor at Valley Junior High and then Central High School in Grand Forks, ND until his retirement in 1990.  He loved his students and genuinely cared about their lives and futures.

Frank was active in his community with Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, and as a member of the Grand Forks Chapter of PFLAG.  Frank was a fierce proponent for Gay Rights and a hero to his family.  He loved going to Bass Lake, gardening, protecting the environment, nature and dogs; but above all else he loved time spent with his family.

Frank is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeannine Anderson Flaa of East Grand Forks, MN; 5 sons, Paul Flaa of Denton, TX; John Flaa of Port Saint Lucie, FL; Mark (Kathy) Flaa of Fargo, ND; Thomas (Lorena) Flaa of Fishers, IN; and Peter (Patty) Flaa of Bagley, MN; grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa), Autumn, Corey, Tyler, Lucas, Elijah, Kayla, Jacob, and Issac; and one great-grandchild, Izaya Flaa.

Frank is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Louise Nereson, Inez Thorndal, and Vernice Danielson; daughter-in-law, Melody Flaa and granddaughter Summer Flaa.  He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or to the donor’s choice.
