Mary Jane Johnson, 93

Thief River Falls, MN age 93 died peacefully on Tuesday April 7, 2015 at Valley Home in Thief River Falls, MN. 

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 13, 2015 at Abundant Life Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Michael Johnson officiating.  Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at the Badger City Cemetery in Badger, MN.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN.  Visitation will also be held from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Monday at Abundant Life Lutheran Church.

Mary Jane “Jean” McFarlane was born on November 30, 1921 in Gladstone, Manitoba the daughter of Wilbert and Pearl (Steele) McFarlane.  She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith.  In 1924 the family moved to the Badger, MN area and attended various country schools.  Mary Jane graduated from Badger High School in 1939.  She worked at various places in Badger, MN until she was married. 

On June 9, 1946 Mary Jane was united in marriage to Norman Wallace Johnson at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Badger, MN and to this union two children were born, John and Joyce.   She was a farm wife and worked at Darwin’s Red Owl in Badger.  In 1963 the family moved to Thief River Falls, MN.

Mary Jane worked at the Red Owl store, Drevlow Insurance, Nopers Motel, and Erl’s Market all in Thief River Falls. 

She was an active member of the Abundant Life Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls.  Mary Jane was well known for her Lefse, which she had requests from and shipped all over the United States.  She was known as the “Lefse Lady”.  Mary Jane enjoyed baking donuts, cookies, flatbread and buns which she shared with her family and friends.  When she wasn’t baking she did hardanger, knitting, made rugs on the loom and exhibited her work at the Pennington County Fair up until 2013.

Survivors include her children, John (Diane) Johnson of Thief River Falls, MN and Joyce (Leonard) Wallace of Easton, PA;  granddaughters, Melissa (Herman Erickson) Johnson of Thief River Falls, Miranda (Guy) Gustafson of Kennedy, MN, Kelly Wallace of Ithaca, NY and Hannah Wallace of Philadelphia, PA; great-grandsons, Tyler Johnson of Thief River Falls, Adam and Isaac Gustafson of Kennedy, MN; sisters, Myrtle (Jerry) Nelson of Thief River Falls,  and Wilma (Gordy) Leeman of Maplewood, MN; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mary Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Norman Johnson of December 20, 2003; parents; and sister, Gertrude (Donald) Fremling.
