Gloria Joan Martinson, 79, of Kennedy, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock, Minnesota. She was the youngest of three children born to Gustav and Hannah (Hanson) Eia of rural Shelly, Minnesota on May 17, 1935. Gloria attended Climax High School, graduating first in her class. She graduated from Moorhead State Teacher’s College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education. She then taught in high schools in Bowden, North Dakota, Kennedy, Hallock, Crookston and Humboldt, Minnesota. In 1959 she married Earl C. Martinson and continued to teach until the couple adopted their son, Michael, in 1973. Earl passed away in 2006. Gloria was very active in church and community organizations serving numerous terms in a leadership capacity. Gloria was a dedicated church member. She was instrumental in obtaining National Registry status for her home church, Zion Lutheran in Shelly, Minnesota. Gloria especially enjoyed music, plays, movies and having a good time with her many friends.
Gloria is survived by her son, Michael, Badger, MN; her sister, Lois (Fred) Buelow, Madison, WI and her sister-in-law, Marjorie Eia, Shelly, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Martin Hawley Eia.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, April 18th, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Maria Lutheran Church, Kennedy. Interment will be in the Kennedy City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service. Pastor Kathy Levenhagen, presiding; Patti Swanson, organist and Sue Albrecht, soloist. Casket bearers will be all of Gloria’s friends. Austin Funeral Home, Hallock.
