Funeral services for Gene Knutson of Roosevelt will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 3:30 PM at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church north of Roosevelt, MN. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening from 5-7 PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Warroad. Interment will be at the Silent City Cemetery in Roosevelt.
Gene was born at home in Gatzke, MN on July 24, 1933, to Kenneth and Alice (Hagen) Knutson. He was the oldest of 3 children. He attended grade school in Gatzke, 9th grade at Maplewood Academy in Maplewood, MN and high school in Roseau.
Gene and Donna Gund were united in marriage on September 17th, 1955, in Salol, MN. After their wedding, Gene and Donna lived in Minneapolis for 6 years, where Gene was employed by Cronstom’s Manufacturing. In 1962 they moved to the Canadian side of the Lake of the Woods where they owned and operated Spruce Island Resort for 3 years. They moved to Wenatchee, Washington in 1966 where Gene did carpentry work. Gene was also caretaker of the Warroad Arena for several years.
In 1972 Gene and Donna moved their 4 boys: Mitchell, Dean, Scott, and Kenny to Roosevelt. Gene was employed at Marvin Windows until he was injured in an industrial accident in 1975. In 1980 they bought “The Oside” store in Roosevelt where they ran “Knutson’s Hartz” grocery, until selling the business to their son Dean and his wife Carol in 1998. Gene loved the grocery business.
Gene was very involved in his community. He was the mayor of Roosevelt for many years, he coached his sons’ youth hockey and baseball teams, and coached the Roosevelt Women’s Fast and Slow Pitch Softball teams. He also enjoyed visiting with many friends during Happy Hour at the Nighthawk.
Gene was an avid trapper. He was a State Predator Controller and trapped many nuisance animals. One of his highlights was live-trapping fisher for the State of Montana’s DNR, which were transported there as part of a project to introduce fisher to the area.
Gene enjoyed watching hockey and baseball games, trapping, hunting, fishing, visiting with friends, and spending time with his family.
Eugene Knutson passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2015, at the LakeWood Health Center in Baudette at the age of 81.
Surviving family members include his wife, Donna, sons: Mitchell (Joan) of Bemidji, Dean (Carol) of Roosevelt, Scott (Barb) of Warroad, Kenny (Melissa) of Roosevelt, sisters, Shanda (Ron) Widell of Buffalo, MN and Lola Mitchesson of Shakopee, MN, 5 grandchildren: Matt, Jennifer, Molly, Cam, Kip, and 4 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Haywood (Mitch) Mitchesson.
