Betty Lou (Gajeski) Kukowski

Betty Lou (Gajeski) Kukowski enjoyed Mother’s day with family members and then passed away peacefully Sunday Night, May 10, 2015, at Lifecare Medical Center in Roseau.  Betty was born Dec. 1st 1928 near Stephen Minnesota to Walter and Rose (Perkerwicz) Gajeski.  She was baptized, and confirmed into the Catholic Faith at Red River Mission Church west of Stephen and also went to school at a country school west of Stephen Minnesota.   On November 9th 1948 she married Al. Kukowski at Red River Catholic Church and they made their home on a farm northwest of Greenbush, MN.  One of Betty’s traits was her persistence, many times her kids heard her say “there ain’t no such word as can’t” they knew they better not give up either. She raised many chickens, ducks and geese along with working alongside her husband on the dairy and grain farm.  She also picked potatoes on the Schaller Potato Farm west of Greenbush and worked at the Greenbush Turkey Processing Plant.  She enjoyed being part of a Homemakers Club as well as one of the Ladies that would put on the Fall Supper in St. Aloysius Parish in Leo, MN.  In 1973 she and Al moved to town and she started working in the kitchen at the Greenbush Hospital.  She was a devoted member of both St. Aloysius Catholic Church of Leo and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church of Greenbush.  Betty’s greatest hobby was pleasing everyone especially with her cooking.  To quote one of her niece’s (Kathy Munro), “She was a wonderful lady-the consummate hostess, always looking out for the needs of others.”  Betty could cook up a three course meal while playing a game of Pinochle or Whist.  She always had pans of bars and cookies around, and coffee ready anytime someone came over.  “Just a little lunch”, was not the same as a little lunch. If she needed help or wanted someone to play cards she could always rely on her grandson Keaton.
Betty is survived by son Larry (Nola) Kukowski of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, daughters  Bernadine (Lynden) Reed of Warroad Minnesota, Leola (Ron) Pearson of Hallock, Minnesota, Diane (Denis) Kjos of Greenbush, Minnesota, and son Darryl (Teresa) Kukowski of Becker, Minnesota.  She is also survived by one brother Danny (Nancy) Gajeski of Stephen Minnesota and one sister Bernice Kukowski of Greenbush Minnesota.  Betty always took pride in her 7 grandchildren; Stephanie, Michelle, Samantha, Stacy, Shawn, Amber, and Keaton; and 8 great-grandchildren Dane, Emma, Payton, Ava, Carson, Mason, Lucinda and Oscar.
She was preceded in death by her husband Al., son Jerome Francis, Parents Walter and Rose Gajeski, Brothers Roman, Serafine, Florian Gajeski and sisters Pearl Smiechewski, and Joanne Kuznia.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00AM, Friday, May 15, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Greenbush with Fr. Luis Buitron presiding.  Jeanne Novacek was the Organist playing for the Choir: Darcy Hasson, Deb Bellefeiulle, Rachael Foley, Courtney Novacek, Allison Fillmore, and Annie Joe Prestegord.  Altar Servers were John Wilebski III & Timothy Peppel and Gift Bearers were Samantha Kukowski, Amber Pearson, and Stacy Mautiala.  Eucharistic Ministers were Elinor Koshenina, Sarah Novacek, and Mona Rae Peterson.  Readers were Larry Kukowski and Stephanie Schuster.  Betty’s Casket Bearers were Keaton Kjos, Rick Nelson, Ryan Schuster, Brian Elderbush, Rick Gajeski, and David Shelvik while all of Betty’s Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren acted as Honorary Bearers.
