Edward “Eddie” Charles Burke, age 95, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks, ND.
Eddie Burke was born on May 16, 1920 in Drayton, ND to Edward C. and Arthemise (Fortier) Burke.
During his youth, he worked at various area farms and acquired a talent for machines and repairing them. When he enlisted in the Army during WWII, his penchant for cars and motors found him in the motor pool. He was stationed in North Africa and France during the war and had many stories to share about his times overseas. After his discharge, he returned to the area and worked at Valley Motors. He married Stephanie Benton. Eddie opened Eddies Auto Sales in East Grand Forks, MN, where he was known as “The best friend of the walking man”…for many years. He married Fern Thornton in 1972 and they had a son, Philip.
Eddie and Fern worked together at Eddie’s Auto Sales and Service until they sold the business and retired. They operated at another location for a short time before and during the flood of 1997. They loved spending time at their cabin on Maple Lake. Ed was proud to be part of the Honor Flight in 2009, which took him to the WWII memorial in Washington, DC. His unit continued to meet yearly for camaraderie in locations throughout the Midwest for many years following their service.
