Ormal “Eagle Eye” Verdean Steffen

Ormal “Eagle Eye” Verdean Steffen was born on January 30, 1923, in Climbing Hill, Iowa to the late Henry and Sophia (Broderson) Steffen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Orm enlisted in the United States Army on January 21, 1943 and received several medals including the American Theater Service, Victory and Good Conduct Medals. On February 16, 1946, he was honorably discharged and returned to the Martin County, Minnesota area.

Orm farmed for many years in the Marin County area until semi-retiring and moving to Baudette, Minnesota where he helped with several resorts in the area. In 1988, Orm was united in marriage to Karen Peterson. They wintered in Mission, Texas and spent their past several summers on Fox Lake in rural Welcome, Minnesota.

Recently, Orm’s health was declining and he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom where he passed away on Monday afternoon, June 22, 2015, at the age of 92 years.

Orm was a longtime member of the American Legion. He had many enjoyments in life which included, farming, hunting, fishing, spending time at the lake, visiting and most of all, spending time with family and friends.

Orm is survived by his wife, Karen Steffen of Fox Lake Village-Welcome; children, Cherryl (Jim) Cramer of Watertown, SD; Richard (Cathy) Steffen of Park Rapids; Christine (Christopher) Nelson of Welcome; Brian (Laurie) Burmeister of Truman; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Robert “Bob” (Mitzi) Steffen of Ogilvie; Jack Steffen of Mankato; Dorothy (Mike) Kennedy of Fairmont; and several nieces and nephews.

Orm is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene Steffen; two sisters, Arlis Walton-Kettmer and Leona Richmonds.
