Mary Theresa Kalinowski was born January 12, 1918 in Tamarack Twp, Marshall County, near Stephen, MN, to Henry and Josephine (Cormier) Schantzen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith in Warren, MN, where she also attended school. Following school she worked numerous jobs in the Warren community and then was united in marriage to Aloysius “Aulie” Kalinowski on September 24, 1940 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Warren, MN. She and Aulie made their home and farmed in Pelan Twp, Kittson County for many years. Mary also worked at Arctic Cat in Karlstad for a number of years. Aulie passed away in 1986 and Mary continued to make her home on the farm until moving into Greenbush in 1996. In 2012 she moved into the Meadows Assisted Living in Karlstad and then the Karlstad Healthcare Center in May of 2015 where she passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the age of 97 years, 6 months, and 23 days.
She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Greenbush. She very much enjoyed baking, gardening, quilting, and taking care of her flowers.
She is survived by her three sons: Jerry (Carol) of Alexandria, Tim (Holly) of Lake Bronson, and Gene of Thief River Falls; three daughters Ardell (Jim) Riddick of Tacoma, WA, Helen (Vern) Goodin of Moorhead and Mary (David) Broten of Moorhead; 18 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Aulie, son Vernon (in infancy), brothers Robert, Lloyd, James, Pat, and Jack Schantzen; sisters Ethel Williams, Maude Schantzen, Ruth Rosini, Doris Fournier, Claire Safranski, Adele Stancyk, Agnes Kalinowski, Margaret Kalinowski, and Helen Sommers.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00AM, Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Greenbush with Fa. Luis Buitron presiding.
Visitation was held after 6PM, Monday, at the Church with a Prayer Service at 7PM and Rosary to follow. Visitation was also held one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment services were held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Cemetery following services.
