Harold Lewis Merrill, 87

Harold Lewis Merrill, 87, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on August 11, 2015 at Altru Health System in Grand Forks, ND, with his children surrounding him.

Harold was born on July 31, 1928 in Crookston, MN to the late Alvis and Eda (Larson) Merrill. He grew up in Fisher, MN and graduated from Fisher High School and attended Crookston Agricultural College. He enlisted in the US Army and served stateside during the peace time after World War II. He was married to Catherine Baker on December 22, 1955 in Manassas, VA. Afterwards, the couple returned to Fisher, MN where they raised their family and farmed.

Harold served, in the past, on many boards including the Fisher Elevator Board, Commander of American Legion Post 242, Secretary and President of Fisher Lutheran Church, Supervisor of West Polk Soil and Water Conservation District, Fisher Chamber of Commerce, Red River Valley Beet Growers, and Fisher Locker Association. Harold also partnered with R. T. Adams in a real estate business.

Harold and his wife, Cathy, enjoyed their condo on Marco Island, FL and their lake home on Maple Lake, MN. They traveled many places around the world. Harold looked forward to any adventure and loved to fish, golf, hunt, play cards, and travel. Later in his years, Harold had a faithful dog, Chip, who was always seen with Harold wherever he went.

Harold is survived by his children, Allen Merrill of Grand Forks, ND; Gem Christianson of Missoula, MT; Aaron (Barbe) Merrill of Fisher, MN; Kim (John) Thorson of Grand Forks, ND. 11 grandchildren, Danielle (Ethan) Kraft of Bismarck, ND; Taylor Merrill of Fargo, ND; Cole (Elizabeth) Christianson of Missoula, MT; Wade Christianson of Missoula, MT; Abbie Christianson of Missoula, MT; Justin Merrill of East Grand Forks, MN; Brok Merrill of Fargo, ND; Adam Kendall of East Grand Forks, MN; Dan Kendall of Bismarck, ND; Ben Tinkham of East Grand Forks, MN; Noah Tinkham of Grand Forks, ND; one great-grandchild, Max Christianson of Missoula, MT; sister, Elaine Prestemon of Bagley, MN; and a nephew, Miles Prestemon of Plano, TX. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Catherine, on July 10, 2013, parents, brother-in-law, Milt Prestemon, and nephew, Lee Prestemon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Fisher Lutheran Cemetery are preferred.

Military honors will be provided graveside by the Fisher American Legion and North Dakota National Guard.
