Harold G. Holte, 96, of Baudette, MN died peacefully on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at the home of his daughter in Bismarck, ND. Harold was born on December 8, 1918, in Koochiching County — a stone’s throw from Clementson. He was the fourth born son to Anders and Juliane (Dyste) Holte. A brother and sister followed. He was confirmed at the Border Evangelical Free Church, the church which his father built.
Harold attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse located on the corner property of the family farm, also serving as a janitor. During his years growing up at home, he was designated as the “berry picker” of the family. Harold graduated from Baudette High School in 1938 and continued in business education at the Agriculture School in Crookston, MN.
Harold enlisted in the Navy April 1942 and served in New York City and in the South Pacific. In 1947, he completed his military duty in Washington D.C. While stationed in New York City, he met Emily Helbig, who was also in the Navy. Harold and Emily were married February 16, 1946, at Church of the Blessed Sacrament, New York City. The first year of their married life was spent in Washington D.C.
In 1947, Harold and Emily moved to St. Paul, MN where he worked at West Publishing Company. Their first three children were born in St. Paul. Following the death of his father in 1950, Harold, Emily, and children moved to Baudette in a home on the Rainy River where four more children were born. Harold joined his brothers, Maurice and Stanley, in the John Deere Implement Dealership in Baudette.
Harold’s hobbies included gardening, woodworking, bee-keeping, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed traveling to Norway, the Holy Land, and missionary trips to Mexico. Volunteer work included Civil Defense Director, school board member, various offices of the Covenant Church, food shelf director of LOW County, Brink Senior Center president, 55 Alive Defensive Driving Course instructor, daily weather reporter for KHTI-TV. Harold was chosen 1992 Outstanding Senior Citizen of the year for LOW County and first runner-up for the state of Minnesota.
Throughout his life, Harold was a devoted Christian. He was a loving husband to Emily who died in 2009. Harold was a wonderful father and advocated higher education. His grandchildren were a special joy to him.
Harold is survived by his children, Patricia (Thomas) Ersfeld of Little Falls, MN, Peggy (Alan) Oberg of Cohasset, MN, Dr. John (Nancy) of Cannon Falls, MN, Frances (Bruce)Hovland of Bismarck, ND, James (Sandy Berg-Holte) of Aitkin, MN, Virginia Krysel of Moorhead, MN, and Albert (Michelle) of Baudette. Grandchildren, Vanessa, Janine, Anna, Jennifer, Jacqueline, Charles, Daniel, Paul, Adam, Scott, Nicholas, Laura, Brian, Emily, Janelle, Alison, Megan, Neil, Nels, and Kari. Step grandchildren, Greg and Jackie, and 17 great-grandchildren. Brother-in-law, Vernon (Marilyn) Helbig of Littleton, CO and sister-in-law MaryRuth Holte of Baudette, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Christian, Arnold, Maurice, Stanley and sister Thelma.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 14th at 10:30 AM at First Lutheran Church in Baudette, MN. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM with a 7:00 Prayer Service at the church. Interment will be at the Silver Creek Cemetery. Military Honors by the Baudette Veterans Ceremonial Squad and the Minnesota Patriot Guard.
