Frieda Koolstra, 98

Frieda Koolstra, 98, of East Grand Forks, MN died Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the Riverview Hospital, Crookston, MN.

Frieda Koolstra was born December 7, 1916 near Bejou, MN the daughter of John and Kate (Konken) Santjer.  She was 1 of 8 children.  She attended a country elementary school near her home.  Frieda helped her dad in farming making hay and doing grain and corn stalking, plowing and cultivating fields.  She was active in her church.  On November 22, 1938 she married Miner Koolstra in Bejou, MN.  They moved to Keywest, MN where she partnered with her husband farming.  In 1944, they moved near Fisher, MN where they continued to farm.  They shared 34 years together.  Throughout her life, Frieda has been tremendously supportive of her husband’s farming business acting as the domestic support person for the employees, cooking thousands of meals, preparing lunches, laundering and caring for their clothing and cleaning the home.  Shortly after her husband’s death in 1972, Frieda moved to East Grand Forks.  From 1973 to 1993 she prepared and served food and helped with cleanup at the Grand Forks Mission.  She spent countless hours and days volunteering at her church, preparing meals, cleaning, painting, serving as the church treasurer for an extended period of time as well as supporting the church in numerous ways.  Frieda also tirelessly helped her parents and Miner’s parents until their death.

She is survived by sister Sena and her husband (Lawrence) Santjer Knowles, of Mahnomen, MN, daughter Katherine Koolstra, grandchildren, Jonathan Gruneich and his wife Mariana and sons, Issac and Brendan, of Prescott, AZ and Jeffrey Gruneich and his wife Xiaoyan Qin and sons Jacob and Benjamin of Wellesley, MA.  She is preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Angeline Gruneich Holdaway, her parents, siblings, Hilko, John, Sophie (Henry) Sweep, Ben, and twins, Jenny and Fred Santjer, who died in infancy. 
 
Funeral Service:  2:00 pm, Saturday, October 17, 2015 in Dahl Funeral Home, 2029 Central Ave. NW, East Grand Forks, MN
 
Visitation: 1 hour before services at the Funeral Home.
 
Interment:  Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston, MN.
