Alvina Kathryn Cater,98

Alvina Kathryn Cater, the daughter of the late William and Sadie (Stephens) Sefkew, was born June 6, 1917, at a rural farm home southeast of Middle River, MN.  The family moved to Royalton, MN and then to St. Cloud in 1918.  Vina attended country elementary school and graduated from Tech High School in St. Cloud in 1934.  She married Marion Cater at St. Cloud on Aug. 21, 1935.  The couple made their home on a farm near St. Cloud for several years, then moved to the St. Hilaire/Thief River Falls area.  They moved to Middle River in 1941 where she was a busy farmwife and homemaker.  They had three children, Janice, Glenn and Gary.  She was always involved in the farming as well as gardening and canning.  The farm was a licensed foster home and the family grew large with the foster boys and young men who still call Vina “Mom”.  She also enjoyed a time as a 4-H leader for the Greenleaf 4-H Club.  She owned and operated the local Drive In, worked at the Turkey Plant and at Young’s Store in Middle River.  She was head cook at the Middle River School for five years and was the first cook for Senior Meals in Middle River.  Back problems forced retirement, so she spent her time quilting, crocheting, knitting, raising flowers and enjoying her grandchildren.  She became a great Twins baseball fan, attending her last game at the age of 95.  Marion and Vina spent twelve winters in Florida and moved to the Meadows Assisted Living in Karlstad in 2005.  Marion passed away Jan. 5, 2009, and Vina moved to the Karlstad Senior Living Center in May of 2015.  She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Middle River working in the church’s women’s groups and teaching Sunday School.  She was honored as the Middle River Outstanding Senior Citizen in 1993, representing the community qt the Marshall County Fair and in area parades.  Vina passed away at the Karlstad Senior Living Center on Sat. evening, December 19, 2015, at the age of 98 years, 6 months and 13 days.
She is survived by her children: Jan (Earl) Anderson, of Stephen, MN,  Glenn (Judy) Cater, of Grafton, WI and Gary (Judie) Cater, of Bemidji, MN;  9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren and several step-great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Vina was preceded in death by her husband, brothers: Earl and Don Sefkow and sisters: Mae Paetznick and Viola Erdmann, all of St. Cloud
