John Leonard Gustafson, 98

John Leonard “Gus” Gustafson, age 98, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2015, at Prestige Orchards care facility in Lewiston, ID near the home of his daughter, Ingrid.
The oldest child of Carl and Jenny (Johnson) Gustafson, John was born February 6, 1917, in Marshall Township, MN. His father passed away in 1924, leaving a wife and four young children. The family then moved into Karlstad and lived on the ridge south of the school.
He attended school in Karlstad and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Minnesota in the late 1930s. John was on a trip to visit relatives in Oregon when the attack at Pearl Harbor happened. He joined the U.S. Army Air Forces from Portland, OR., in January 1942. He was subsequently stationed in California serving in the medical corps. He married, Helen “Nellie” Hanson, in April 1943.
After the war, they lived in first home in Pendleton, OR., By 1952 they had four children and lived in Spokane, WA. He owned an watch and clock repair business. He was a skilled heavy equipment mechanic at missile site and repaired road equipment in the timber industry.
John was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents,  his wife, Nellie; sisters Elna Johnson and Margaret Swanson; and brother Carl “Rudy” Gustafson.
He is survived by son John A. (Judy) Gustafson of Everett, WA.; daughters Linda Dick of Placentia, CA., Lois (Albert) Chapel of Troy, MT, and Ingrid (David) Stanley of Lewiston; ID, 10 grandchildren; five step-grandchilden; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; four nieces; and one nephew.
The family will gather for a memorial in the spring in Spokane, at which time his remains will be interred at Fairmont Memorial Park.
