Dennis Mack, age 74

Dennis Mack, age 74, of East Grand Forks, MN, passed away on Wednesday December 23, 2015 at Altru Hospital surrounded by family and God’s grace.

Dennis was born in Grand Forks, ND on December 19, 1941, to Frank and Marie (Stengl) Mack. He graduated from Sacred Heart in 1959. Dennis was married to Caryl Elaine Thompson on August 19, 1965 and they enjoyed a full, happy marriage over the last 50 years.

Dennis grew up in a family of six on a farm east of East Grand Forks.  Early on he learned the lessons that come from hard work and responsibility to family.  In high school he was part of a football team that was eventually inducted into the Sacred Heart High School Athletic Hall of Fame.  After graduation, Dennis began a career farming potatoes, grain and beets.    Later in life he went into the insurance business, and began Evergreen Insurance in 1994 along with his son Jason, and was eventually joined by daughter Nicole.   At various times in his life Dennis raced sprint cars, fished Marlin, golfed and went on fishing, hunting and snowmobiling trips.

Dennis absolutely loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports, but he was an especially devoted hockey fan.  He and Caryl would often be in several rinks in a day to catch all the games they could.  Dennis and Caryl celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 19th of this year.  They were devoted to each other and were always together, living life fully.  Throughout their marriage the couple enjoyed golfing, lake living, dancing, traveling south in the winter, watching their children and grandchildren’s events, practicing their faith, and being with friends and family.

Dennis believed in hard work, family, friendship, his community and his faith.  He worked hard and played hard.  He was proud of his Bohemian heritage.  He was authentic, steadfast and he loved to laugh. Dennis was caring and honest – he had such a big heart, and was always willing to help.  He had a gentle smile and a firm handshake.  Because of how he was, Dennis was quick to become a true friend, and he has enjoyed so many good friendships over the years.  He had a knack for dispersing life’s wisdom with different sayings that were often times as humorous as they were instructive.  Dennis was a member of the Eagles Club #350 and the Elks Club.  Dennis was one of a kind.

During the last decade Caryl has been Dennis’ rock, and the two had weathered a long battle against the cancer that eventually took his life.  Dennis will be dearly missed, but for him we lift up our hearts and accept God’s gift of grace and assurance that we all will be reunited.

Dennis  is survived by his wife, Caryl of East Grand Forks, MN;  daughter, Brenda Mack (Trent Brekken), and children, Dane, Sydney and their father Mike Anderson of Crookston, Minn.;  son Jason (Kristie) Mack and their children Alexa, Haley, Tanner and CJ; daughter Nicole (Cory) Chupka and their children Tyra, Kole and Jake; sisters, Karen (Richard) Kovar, Jane (Rob) Wagner all of East Grand Forks, MN; brothers, Don (Janis) Mack of East Grand Forks, MN, David Mack of Minneapolis, MN and Linus (Kathy) Mack of Bemidji, MN.
