Sarah Elizabeth Sowokinos, 101, passed into her eternal home on Saturday, April 9th, at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, ND. Elizabeth was born February 5, 1915, in Giltner, Nebraska to parents William Race and Laura (Sidders) Race. She married Alexander Alfred Sowokinos in Papillion, Nebraska, on September 7th, 1932. They, along with Alex’s son, Richard, lived near Brule, Nebraska. They had two more sons, Frank and Joseph, before moving to Omaha in 1943. In 1948 they moved to a farm near St. Edward, Nebraska, where they lived until moving to Columbus, Nebraska in 1963. In 2003 Elizabeth moved to Prairie Village in Columbus. In 2013 she moved to the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, ND.
Elizabeth enjoyed playing cards and traveling to Nebraska football games. In 1995, when she was 80, Elizabeth traveled alone to the Fiesta Bowl to watch Nebraska beat Florida for a National Championship. Elizabeth (Liz) was a delight to all who knew her. She always saw the bright side of things even during difficult times. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Columbus.
Elizabeth is survived by her son Joseph (Janice), Grand Forks, ND; granddaughters Kristy, CA, and Jill, AZ; grandson Douglas (Diane), Eagan, MN; and great grandchildren, Matthew, Blake and Megan, Eagan, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alex in 1985; son Frank; infant daughter Laura Bell; step-son Richard; granddaughter Tiffany; and grandson Frank.
Arrangements handled by Dahl Funeral Home, East Grand Forks, MN. A memorial service for Elizabeth will take place in Nebraska at a later date. Memorials are requested to Lutheran Sunset Home.
