Clarice Louise (Waage) Burkel, 73

Clarice Louise (Waage) Burkel was born on March 18, 1943 in Huss Township, Roseau County, MN. to Olaf and Louise (Vacura) Waage.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in Greenbush.  Following her graduation she went to work at M & Q café in Greenbush where she worked for many years.  She was united in marriage to Gerald Burkel on April 27, 1969 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Greenbush and the two made their life long home in Greenbush.  Clarice worked at the Red Owl grocery store in Greenbush for a number of years before going to work at the Greenbush School as a paraprofessional, working in the library, and assuming the duties as the playground monitor where she worked for 28 years before retiring.  She and Gerald also worked for Paul
Everson at Jeff’s Super Service for a number of years before completely retiring to spend their time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Clarice passed away on Monday morning, April 25, 2016 at LifeCare Medical Center in Roseau at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 2 days.
She was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church and a current member of United Free Lutheran Church in Greenbush, WMF Ladies Aid, and very much enjoyed working with the youth members at the Galilee Bible Camp in Lake Bronson.
She is survived by her husband Gerald of 47 years, her daughter Noreen (Danny) Penas of Badger, MN, 3 sons Terry (Cari), Jason (Tammy) and Kirby (Arrial) Burkel all of Greenbush, MN,; sister Thilda Janousek of Greenbush, MN, 7 grandchildren: Alex, Ben (Alisha), Courtney and Denton Burkel of Greenbush, Tenisha Berger and Josie Penas of Badger, and Emma Burkel of Greenbush; 2 great grandchildren Zane and Connor Kazmierczak of Greenbush, her very special friend Shanoah Mooney of Greenbush, along with many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She is preceded by her parents, brothers Danny and Vernon Waage, brother in laws Leonard Janousek and Orvn Cole, and her In laws Peter and Lillian Burkel.
Clarice was very passionate and proud of her family.  She enjoyed spending time with all of them.
Funeral service were held at 10:00AM, Friday, April 29, 2016 at United Free Lutheran Church of Greenbush with Pastor LeRoy Petersen presiding.  Special music was provided by Jody Kirkeide and Arlene Jenson singing “Great Speckled Bird”, “Amazing Grace”, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “If I Go First And You Remain”.  Jeanne Novacek provided the Prelude music as well as the Congregational Hymns “Rock of Ages” and “What a Friend We Have In Jesus”.   Clarice’s Casket Bearers were Gene Janousek, Joshua Janousek, Scott Waage, Jordan Hanson, Kevin Waage, Justin Hanson, Kurt Waage, Brian Burkel, Aaron Burkel and Derek Janousek.  Her Honorary Bearers were Spencer Cole, Tim Cole, Brian Waage and Eric Arneson.
Visitation was held after 5PM, Thursday, at the church with a Prayer Service at 7PM.  Visitation was also held one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment services were held at Zion Lutheran Cemetery of rural Greenbush following services.
