Jonina “Leone” Mitchell, 88 of East Grand Forks, MN died Peacefully with her family by her side, Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the Altru Hospital, Grand Fork, ND.
Jonina Segruin “Leone” (Benson) Mitchell was born March 24, 1927 in Acra, N.D. the daughter of Leonard and Anna (Hillman) Benson. She grew up outside of Mountain ND , where her family farmed for several years. Leone graduated from Milton high school in 1945. She attended the University of North Dakota and Mayville State Teacher’s College, going on to teach in a one room school in Garder N.D. She married Lawrence Mitchell on November 11, 1949. Together, they moved to East Grand Forks and went into partnership as Mitchell Trucking where she worked as his bookkeeper until retirement. Aside from the trucking business, Leone was a homemaker raising five children. Leone was 100% Icelandic.
She had many hobbies; some of which included, baking, gardening, home interior work, crocheting and sewing but she was really a “Jack of all trades “She was still doing the Grand Forks Herald crossword puzzle every day, getting them all right. Leone was a perfectionist at anything she did. Never resting until a job was done. Mother to many, a true friend to the end.
She is survived by four sons, Larry, Loran, and Leon ‘Craig’ Mitchell, one daughter, Susan, eleven grandchildren, Michael, Heather, Miranda, Haley, Stacia, Ashley, Tim, Michelle and Emily, twelve great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son, Lynn, granddaughter, Pamela Socwell, three brothers, Calvin, George, and Jerry, and her true friend and only sister, Guddrun “Goodie”.
