Martha D. Carter, 74

Martha D. Carter, devoted mother, wife, and grandmother, age 74 of East Grand Forks, MN, passed away on Saturday, June 4th, 2016 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks after a courageous battle with cancer with her family by her side.

Martha Dorothy Carter was born on October 8, 1941, the daughter of Charles J. and Mary (Kotrba) Gust.  She was raised on the family farm near Tabor, MN and left home at the age of 16 to help her sister Helen with children.  At the age of 17, she worked at Ontario Café in Grand Forks and then at Griffiths Department Store in the children’s department.  She was united in marriage to Merle Carter on October 15, 1960 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Tabor, MN.  Following her marriage to Merle, they made their home in East Grand Forks.  Martha sold Fuller Brush and had a Cleaning Business with her husband Merle for over 38 years.  

Martha dedicated her life to her family and cherished the time spent with them vacationing at Rocky Point on Lake of the Woods for 43 years.  She was active throughout her life in the Sacred Heart School and Church community.

Martha’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Altru Cancer Center (Dr. Denchev, oncology and Dr. Seeger, radiology), 2nd floor Altru Hospital, and the Valley Memorial Homes Transitional Care Unit. Special thanks to Dr. Rusten and Dr. Peterson and all nurses, CNA’s, and other staff who gave her such special care.

Loving family members of Martha include her husband Merle of 55 years; children, Marie (Dale) Carter Brooks of Duluth, MN, Marti (Curt) Zander of Cottage Grove, MN, Mary Gerszewski of East Grand Forks, MN, Marc (Tracy) Carter of Cloquet, MN, Merlin Carter of Fargo, ND and Marla (Kerby) Plante of St. Cloud, MN along with 13 grandchildren and one brother David Gust of Crookston, MN.  She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Carter; siblings, Helen Bruley, Donald Gust, Norbert Gust, Mary Vanyo and great-granddaughter, Dakota Schrunk.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Sacred Heart Development Scholarship Fund.

Funeral Service:  11:00 AM on Friday, June 10, 2016 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 200 3rd St. NW, East Grand Forks, MN.

Visitation:  5:00 to 7:00 with a 6:30 PM Prayer Service on Thursday, June 9, 2016 in Dahl Funeral Home, 2029 Central Ave. NW, East Grand Forks, MN and also one hour prior Funeral Service on Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Interment:  Resurrection Cemetery ~ East Grand Forks, MN
