Roy Albin Dostal, 51

Roy Albin Dostal, 51, Roseau, MN, passed away on June 2, 2016 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND due to pneumonia and kidney complications.
Roy was born on May 10, 1965 to Ted and Mary Dostal and joined three sisters, three brothers and two grandmothers on the home farm. Born with Down Syndrome and then afflicted with childhood rheumatoid arthritis, Roy was faced with a unique set of challenges that never kept him down. He was blessed with loving parents, devoted family and caregivers throughout his life. He soon became a “little brother” to many and an “Uncle Roy” to countless others!
Roy received his secondary school certificate from Roseau High School. In 1984 he moved to Hanson’s Boarding Home in Thief River Falls, MN. This was his home for 25 years. He worked at the ODC and then at the Falls DAC. One of his favorite jobs was working at Hardee’s, where he rolled silverware for the kid’s meal and enjoyed everyone that stopped by to say Hi.
Due to an illness, Roy then moved to an apartment in Badger where he was cared for by Compassionate Home Care nursing staff from March 2008 to December 2011.  He then moved to LSS Raven Home in Roseau where he lived and attended the day program at Focus Corp.
No matter where Roy lived, he received the most amazing and compassionate care. They and the others he lived with will always have fond memories of Roy as he touched all their hearts in such a positive way. His love for patriotic music, parades, the American flag, and Santa Claus brought him so much joy.
Roy had a special gift. Whether you were praying for him, because of him, or at him, God always seemed to be where Roy was and you knew one of those two was in charge! ?  He also “Lived” to attend Mass on Sundays and work on Monday!  Around him people seemed to become more kind and compassionate…..More like “Jesus”.  Although Roy was unable to express himself completely through words, he communicated effectively through the use of his own words and gestures. Through his life, he became a unique instrument of God’s grace and a symbol of Christ among us.
Roy is survived by his siblings: Barb (Dave) Holtgard  of Fargo, ND; Susan (Terry) Schostag of Navarre, FL; Steve (Donna) Dostal of Roseau, MN; Nancy (Mike) Gilbertson of Hazen, ND; Frank (Corinne) Dostal of Badger, MN; and Bob (Becky) Dostal of Badger, MN; his special caregivers, Jody Vigness of Grand Forks, ND; Rhonda Williamson of Roseau, MN; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
His parents, grandparents, and nephew, Timothy Gilbertson, preceded him to eternal life.
Visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Church on Thursday, June 9th from 5-7 p.m. followed by a prayer service and at the church on Friday morning one hour prior to the Mass.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Badger. Father John Kleinwachter will officiate and internment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
