Richard “Dick” L. Bonlie, age 75, of East Grand Forks, MN, passed away on Thursday, June 23rd, 2016 at his home with his family by his side.
Richard Larry Bonlie was born on May 19, 1941, in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Arthur and Mildred (Foss) Bonlie. He grew up in Grand Forks, attended Central High School and graduated in 1959. Following high school, Dick enlisted in the United States Army serving three years until being honorably discharged in 1962. On December 17, 1966, he was united in marriage to Lucille “Lucy” LeClerc in Oakwood, ND. He attended the University of North Dakota and graduated in 1970 with a BS in Industrial, Education Technology and was an AWS Welding Inspector and Minnesota Certified Bridge Welder. In l973, he began his teaching career in East Grand Forks where he taught Welding at the Area Vocational Technical Institute later known as Northwest Technical College in East Grand Forks. Dick retired from teaching at the college in 2002 but continued working as a welding inspector.
Dick enjoyed fourteen wonderful years in retirement: fishing and camping at Lake of the Woods, hiking up Flat Iron Mountain in Arizona, playing pickle ball with friends and swimming at the YMCA. He also enjoyed wood carving, riding his motorcycle, spending time with his grandchildren and helping others. Dick will also be missed by family and friends for his humor and one-liners.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife Lucille of 49 years; son, Art Bonlie of Houston, TX and daughter, Michelle (Tim) Beninato of San Antonio, TX; five grandchildren: Elijah, Noah, Annaliese, Abigail and Skyla; and sister Jean (Gary) Anderson of Viking, MN. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, brother Tim Bonlie and nephew David Bonlie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation or to the donor’s choice.
Funeral Service: 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 520 5th Ave. N., Grand Forks, ND with Father Gerard Braun presiding.
Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 with a 6:30 PM Prayer Service on Monday, June 27, 2016 in Dahl Funeral Home, 2029 Central Ave. NW, East Grand Forks, MN and also one hour prior Funeral Service on Tuesday in St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Interment: Resurrection Cemetery ~ East Grand Forks, MN
