Helen Johannesen, 92

Funeral services for Helen Johannesen were held on Saturday, August 13, at 2 p.m. from First Congregational Church in Baudette. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before the service.

Helen was born on January 8, 1924, in Baudette to Rueben and Helen Varco.

In 1943 she married Edmund Johannesen in Baudette. After their marriage, the young couple traveled around the United States with his duties for the U.S. Army.

After returning to Baudette, Helen worked for Rowell Laboratories as a secretary. In 1966 they moved to Duluth where Ed worked as a construction engineer and Helen was an executive assistant to Mielke Electric. Helen continued to work for Mielke until age 72 when she retired.

Ed and Helen built a beautiful retirement home on Horeshoe Lake north of Duluth where they lived until Ed’s death in 1992. Helen relocated to Baudette in 1996. She lived in Summerfield West until failing health caused a move to the ARC and subsequently to the Care Center where she died on August 9.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Edmund, brother Ozborn Varco, her twin sister Ruby Clary and nephew Gary Tischart.

She is survived by daughter Barbara (Dennis) Koster, Williams, son Wade Johannesen (Ginny Melvie) of Baudette and Frisco, Texas and grandson Laine Koster of Silver Bay, Minnesota.

She is also survived by brother-in-law Forrest (Terri) Johannesen, Medina, Ohio, sister-in-law Jewell (Gary) Johannesen, Coshocton, Ohio, nephew Chuck (Kathy) Tischart of Baudette, niece Lorraine (Deke) Baker of Elk River, Minnesota, and Nancy (Joe) Paulseth of Moose Lake, Minnesota, along with numerous friends and relatives.

The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the entire staff of the ARC, Care Center, clinic and hospital in Baudette for their exceptional love and compassion in their care for Helen.
