Sherman Leon Stortroen, 70

Sherman Leon Stortroen, age 70, of East Grand Forks, MN, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016, at his home.

Sherman was born in Crookston, MN, in Bethesda Hospital on January 1, 1946, the son of the late Loran and Gladys (Kleven) Stortroen.  He was raised in rural Climax on the family farm and graduated from Climax High School.  Afterwards he enlisted in the United States Army for 2 years where he was stationed on the East Coast.  Upon his return he worked at Farmer’s Union Oil, sold insurance, went into business with his uncle Arvid Stortroen in A&S Construction, worked for the Polk County Highway Department, RJ Zavoral and Sons, and then ICS until his retirement in 2008.  He was united in marriage to Doreen Kovar on August 27, 1998.  In his free time he was an avid follower of World of Outlaws, even travelling the circuit when he could, enjoyed hunting and fishing, but was mostly known for his work ethic not uncommonly putting in over 60 hours a week.

Sherman is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Doreen Stortroen of East Grand Forks, MN; daughters, Heidi (Brian Mills) Stortroen of Grand Forks, ND, and Robyn (Josh) Wendt of Moorhead, MN; step-daughters, Melissa Christie of Grand Forks, ND, and Jessica (Evan Hiller) Kram of Grand Forks, ND; 9 grandchildren; sisters, Eileen (George) Gunderson of Buxton, ND, and Janice (Robert) Tjon of Twin Valley, MN; brother, Larry Stortroen of Climax, MN; and uncle and aunt, Arvid and Marlene Stortroen of Climax, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Sherman is preceded in death by his parents, Loran and Gladys Stortroen and aunts and uncles, Helen and Don Prudhomme, Sidney and Lois Stortroen, Shirley and Arnie Froyom, Ethel and Dewain Thompson, and Emmet and Benora Kleven.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial be made to Sand Hill Lutheran Cemetery and Hospice Red River Valley.

Funeral Service: 10:00 am ~ Friday, November 18, 2016 at Sand Hill Lutheran Church, 34145 State Highway 220 SW, Climax, MN 56523

Visitation: 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm ~ Thursday, November 17, 2016, at Dahl Funeral Home, 2029 Central Ave NW, East Grand Forks, MN 56721, with a Prayer Service at 6:30 pm and also one hour prior Funeral Service on Friday in Sand Hill Lutheran Church.
