Shirley Staples, age 89 of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Duluth, MN passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Shirley Ann Staples was born on September 23, 1927 in rural McCanna, ND the daughter of Martin and Alma (Anderson) Ness. Shirley grew up in Drayton, ND and graduated from Drayton High School. Following her high school graduation she attended the University of North Dakota and received a degree in accounting. That is where she met John “Jack” Staples and then in April of 1947 she was united in marriage to John. They lived in Grand Forks before moving to Chicago area. She lived in many places in the United States during Jack’s career in the Business Industry Following Jack’s retirement, they moved back to Duluth. Sadly on November 18, 1988 Jack passed away. Shirley was active in many activities and enjoyed volunteering, playing bridge, golf, gardening and reading among others.
Family members of Shirley include her two daughters, Dianne Staples of Bloomington, MN; Terri Staples (Jim Pender) of East Grand Forks, MN and brother, Paul Ness of Minot, ND; sister-in-law, Kathryn Ness of El Sobrante, CA along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother Martin Earl Ness.
Memorial Service: 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 in Dahl Funeral Home, 2029 Central Ave. NW, East Grand Forks, MN.
Visitation: One Hour Prior Memorial Service on Tuesday in Dahl Funeral Home.
