The Karlstad city council voted to allocate funds to add a paved trail to MnDOT’s re-surfacing project in Karlstad this fall.
At Monday’s meeting, Jeremy Hadrava of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) presented an estimate of $12,334 for a 10-foot wide paved trail along the west side of Highway 59 from Stassen Avenue to Grant Street. Because the trail was considered an “add on” by request from the city, the city would be responsible for funding the project.
The city approved the funds for the trail with the safety of residents in mind, especially families with children. Pedestrians currently have to walk or bike on the highway leading up to Stassen Ave, where sidewalks or sidestreets begin.
