Souder retires after 60 years on township

Alpha Souder sat at her kitchen table in her rural Halma home—a place where many Norway Township board meetings took place. After over 60 plus years of combined official and unofficial service to the Norway Township as of December 2016, Souder decided to retire. She used this table to now discuss her time with the township, including what she will miss most about it.

Before Souder officially served the township, she assisted her husband, the late Chester Souder, with the township clerk’s position from 1953 until his passing in March 1998. During those 45 years, the township board always met once a month at the Souder couple’s home, located 2.5 miles east of Halma. At these meetings, Alpha served coffee and goodies, such as breads and cookies, something she did until retiring.
