Mildred Emelia (Nelson) Carriere was born in rural Strathcona, Minnesota on October 31, 1921 to Albert and Anna (Larson) Nelson. Mildred grew up in Strathcona and graduated from Greenbush High School as Salutatorian of her class in 1941. As a young teen Mildred traveled the area countryside with her sisters singing at weddings, funerals and other local functions.In 1941 Mildred married James Gerald (Snooky) Carriere and they resided in Middle River where Snooky owned and operated the Cities Service Station and the bulk fuel business. Mildred was a stay at home mom to their five children, Sheryl, James, Lee, Kathy, Michael, as well as countless others from the neighborhood.She was very active in the Middle River American Legion Auxiliary and First Lutheran Church in Middle River, where she loved teaching Sunday School and was an enthusiastic member and volunteer of the Ladies Aide and church Circle. Throughout the 60’s you could find Mildred driving the Legion Baseball team to various games around the Middle River area and later, in the 70’s, she attended many Middle River basketball and baseball games. Mildred would reminisce about the old days and was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She enjoyed the Greenbush Manor immensely and spent many joyous birthdays celebrating with her family and friends. Mildred passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at LifeCare Greenbush Manor, surrounded by her family, at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 22 days.Mildred is survived by her children James (Patty) Carriere of Fargo, ND, Mike (Lorna) Carriere of Warren, MN, Kathy Austad of Thief River Falls, MN and Sheryl Carriere and Lee (Wendy) Carriere of Middle River, MN. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Anna, Husband James Gerald Carriere, 1 grandson Jonathan Austad, brother Harry (Doris) Nelson, sisters Irene (Willard) Clow and Evelyn Voecks.Funeral Services were held at 1:00PM, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at First Lutheran Church in Middle River with Pastor Mark Mathews presiding. Special Music as provided by Germaine Carriere, The Beito Family, and Lois and Lois with Lois Peterson accompanying as Organist. Mildred’s Casket Bearers were her grandchildren Germaine and McKenzie Carriere, Jamey Austad, Mathew, Craig and Kelsey Carriere, Joe, Josh, Jeremiah and Isaia Carriere.Visitation was held after 6PM, Friday, at Collins Funeral Chapel in Middle River with a Prayer Service at 7PM. Visitation was also held one hour prior to services at the church.Interment services will be held at Woodman Cemetery of rural Middle River.Mildred’s family would like to say a special thank you to all of the staff at LifeCare Greenbush Manor for all of their special care and thoughtfulness that they gave to Mildred and her family.Arrangements are with Collins Funeral Home of Middle River.
