Loran David Eastman, age 74 of Climax, MN, passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Valley Eldercare Transitional Care Unit in Grand Forks, ND.
Loran was born on January 30, 1943 in Cavalier, ND, the son of Jonathon “Dan” and Leona (Hiebert) Eastman. Loran grew up on the family farm west of Cavalier, ND. He was baptized and confirmed at Hallson Icelandic Lutheran Church and attended elementary school at the Eastman Country School, a one-room rural schoolhouse. He graduated from high school in Cavalier, ND in 1961.
Following high school, Loran attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND where he studied Industrial Drafting and Design and graduated in 1963. He worked as a draftsman for Collins Radio (later Rockwell Collins) in Cedar Rapids, IA, McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, MO, and Polaris Industries in Roseau, MN. During his career as a draftsman, he was involved with drafting of parts for snowmobiles, aircraft, and even the cockpit of the space shuttle Columbia. After he left drafting, he worked for Janda Electric Motor Company in Cedar Rapids, IA and also farmed and raised cattle.
Loran’s passion for music began early, listening to his father’s band, The Happy Five, practice in their home and play at local dance halls. Loran became a drummer and was a part of “The Sleepless Knights” who played classic country and rock and roll music in northwestern Minnesota in the 70’s. He was also part of the duo, “Scotch and Soda” with his friend and brother-in-law Steve Anderson. He moved to Iowa and played as a drummer in a country and rock band there. After retiring from drumming, Loran went on to run sound systems for concerts and community events. In recent years, Loran’s hobbies included reading, enjoying nature, and long walks with his dog, “Shadow”. He would frequently give updates on sightings of fox, coyote, deer, owls, hawks, coons, and a wide variety of songbirds. Another hobby of Loran’s was riding his Goldwing Motorcycle on long rides. In 2010 he moved to Climax, MN to be closer to his family.
Family members who survive Loran include his children, Paul Eastman of Climax, MN; Pam (Randy) Anderson of East Grand Forks, MN; and Eric Eastman of Estherville, IA; grandchildren, Nick Anderson and Evan Anderson; and step-grandchild, Aaron (Amber) Anderson; Marlene’s children, Kim Yerkes and Brett Vesey; and Marlene’s grandchildren, Micale and Miranda Vesey; and one brother, Robert (Karolyn) Eastman of Roseau, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlene Vesey; sister, Helen Anderson; and brother, Walter Eastman.
