Old Man Winter loosened his grip in a big way, ushering in warmer spring-like temperatures which allowed the Rainy River to open up at a fast pace the past week.
The official opening in Baudette was at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 24.
The local Department of Homeland Security and United States Customs office in Baudette is responsible for that official reading and marks the moment that the river channel opens up at the International Bridge.
Assuming there is no re-freeze, which doesn’t seem likely with temperatures forecasted into the 40s and 50s for the next few weeks, the March 24 opening would be the eighth earliest opening since record keeping began in 1934.
See this week’s Northern Light Region for a complete list of river opening dates throughout the history of its record keeping.
