Joy was born September 3, 1930, to Gustav F. Johnson and Betty Carolyne (Wiklund) Johnson on the family farm in Norway township of Kittson County. She started school in the nearby one room school but soon was enrolled in the “big” school in Lake Bronson. She graduated from high school in 1948 and with the help of her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Ethel Johnson, moved to Minneapolis. Her first job was at the Woolworth Store in the downtown area of the city. She started as a cashier and retired as a buyer for seasonal merchandise. In 1956, she married Palmer Levenhagen who was also living in Minneapolis at that time. They moved back to Lake Bronson where Joy worked at the Coffee Cup. After they were divorced, she worked in the Woolworth Store in Thief River Falls for a short time but soon returned to Minneapolis to her original employment. Her vacations were spent visiting family and getting to know her nieces and nephews. After her retirement in 1992, Joy bought a house in Lake Bronson and was finally home. She renewed old friendships as well as making new friends. Her main social networks were at the Lake Bronson Senior Center playing bingo and the Hallock Senior Center playing cards. She loved to play whist anytime she could find three more people and a deck of cards. Joy was active in the Lake Bronson Zion Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School and served as WELCA treasurer for many years as well as taking her turn to serve lunch. She was an active member of the quilting group, in charge of coffee. She also had more time for her favorite hobby: creating cross-stitch pieces of art. They included beautiful pillowcases, dishtowels, tablecloths and wall hangings. Her dog, Abbey, was a faithful companion. Joy is survived by her sister, Carol; sister-in-laws, Ethel and Peggy; eight nieces, Peggy, Susan, Becky, Sandra, Wendy, Tressa, Cindy, and Shanda; five nephews, Stephen, Martin, Al, Tony and Andrew, and 28 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father in 1967, mother in 1982, brothers, Ralph, Richard, Marvin and Dale, sister-in-laws Florence and Rosie, brother-in-law David, niece, Patricia and nephew, Fritz. A memorial service was held Monday, July 17, at Zion Lutheran Chuch in Lake Bronson, Pastor Kathy Levenhagen, officiant, and Margie Hawk, special music. Interment at Riverside Cemetary in Lake Bronson, MN. Collins Funeral Home.
